what is it about men that makes them believe they can treat us like 2nd class citizens?
how and when did this all begin??
i'm reading this book by naomi wolf called the beauty myth and it talks about the systematic oppression of women through different avenues of guilt and assumptions...(starting w/ the 1800's and all the crap men said to prevent women from gaining rights, all the way to today's time, when women are too smart/powerful, so now "they" make us feel bad about how we look and dictate how we "should" look...basically, they'll do/say anything to deny us further power... b/c they can't deal... psha! get over it! we're here, we're queer! get used to it.. oh wait.. wrong slogan... nevermind...)
it drives me nuts! (by the by... i'm NOT a feminist and i hate them...)
but reading this stuff.. just makes me go.. whoa... what the fuck!? how can this be?? i was watching an episode of the x-files(shock!) and this woman had a bruised face, and one guy says to her, i'd love to catch the bastard who did that to you...which got me thinking... why do you assume that she was beaten by a man? maybe she fell? maybe it was her girlfriend? maybe it was a million other things... but to assume that it was done by a guy... i dunno, something seems off.... i think there's something fundamentally flawed in a society that just accepts this sort of violence...to the point of casual assumption...
and as for that double standard... give me a break...sometimes i think.. wow.. look at how we've come as a race of humans... what we've accomplished... blah blah blah.. and then there's always that something... of like... wow.. it's fucking 2007 already.. open your fucking eyes... like.. seriously... wake up and shut up! (or smthing a bit more articulate than that...)
however... i have to say... w/ no kinda schmaltzy blahness... that i LOVE being a chick... it's so much more interesting.... i'd MUCH rather have boobs than a dick.. (no offense guys)... and i like having options...(ie pants or skirt...regardless that it's always the former.. i like choice)
i like that i can wear make up (though i don't) and mess around w/ my hair (which i do!) and that i have and endless supply and variety of beauty supplies..(well... that's a bit more complicated... is it there to benefit me? or to make me look like a woman should? hmmmm)
