movie review:descent (w/ rosario dawson)

first though, a random thought: i love dolores o'riorden.. (lead of the disbanded cranberries)
she's great :D killer solo album.
ok, so after MONTHS of anticipating, waiting, eagerly hoping for a release date... i was informed by my protege that this movie has already been out for rent... argh..
so said flick is, as the title of the post informed, descent w/ rosario dawson...(not to be confused w/ the horror of the same name about the cave....)
the plot is simple: girl gets date raped, spirals down and seeks vengeance on said rapist....
the trailer was dark... intense, interesting... provocative...
sadly, the movie is anything but...
the scenes were long and boring, the acting over the top and TOO intense (making the facial features of the actors laughable at times) and there was no clear progression... it was tired and cliche in a way that brought nothing exciting to the viewing...
the protagonist, maya goes from smart college co-ed w/ a future to devastated dead pan junkie/prostitute to making a comeback in school and becoming empowered by thoughts of violence...
i hate revenge flicks for one reason: they continue the circle of violence... they show that the liberating/empowering way to get over trauma is to inflict the same kind of devastation and pain on the perpetrator.... i dunno, it doesn't seem right... furthermore, w/ this particular film, she finds empowerment (can't think of another word, here...) through another man... she does her thing and then relies on the external force of another to finish the job...
i was obscenely disappointed with this flick.. i had high hopes for both dawson and director talia lugacy...
the thing that really bothered me too, was the lack of... substance... we didn't get to see her struggle w/ the aftermath... just a quick plunge into the dark abyss of sex, drugs, and revenge... she didn't even seem angry... and i supposed one could make an argument that this showcases how dead she feels and how she's shut down b/c feeling and dealing is too hard, but i don't think that's where it was meant to go... it lacked... emotion.. it was too sterile and too clean cut and distanced...
bummer... it had some potential...
the movie critic.

That ain't no etch-a-sketch. This is one doodle that can't be un-did, homeskillet.
final random thought: ellen page is still superfly...
